There are a few occupations in the world in which you can work as much or little as you like. Becoming a traffic controller in sydney allowed me to make money while traveling the world and using Sydney as my base.
When I first heard about traffic controller work it sounded like it was too good to be true! Work with your friends? As much or little time off as you want? And a decent wage on top of it all!
I went straight online and booked the nearest traffic control course to where I was living. Luckily there are loads of different course providers so I was able to get in for the following day!
The course took me two days to complete and then I had to sit a practical assessment to show I was able to direct and manage traffic safely and efficiently. I made a stop at Bunnings on my way home and picked up PPE gear and a two-way radio and began applying to Traffic Control companies!
I received a call the following day from ETM Group to see if I was available for an interview, I accepted happily and met with them later that day. The process of getting set up was quick and easy. I received a message about work straight away, I was excited to see what all the hype was about!
My first day as a traffic controller in Sydney!
Waking up the next morning at sunrise was a great start to the day. I got all my PPE ready to attend my shift. I had my route figured out to work on the bus/train I was using the night before so I could leave my house with enough time to get to the site 15-20 mins earlier to familiarize myself with the site.
Once I arrived, I headed to the induction room and met with my supervisor for the day. He showed me the TCP( Traffic Control Plan) which I learned in my course. I headed to the areas needed and set up signage with the other traffic controllers. Once the job was set up, we discussed the job in detail, any deliveries that were coming and safety.
I headed to my station for the day and started my job. Our supervisor was frequently around to communicate with all the traffic controllers, making sure the required breaks are taken and everyone is doing their job with full attention. Mostly I directed traffic with a stop slow sign when deliveries were coming into site. I also assisted pedestrians across the road! It was nice to work in the sun and chat with the other TC’s!
At the end of my first day and all work was off the road I helped to bring signs/equipment back to the site and then got my timesheet signed and headed home! I worked 4 days my first week and enjoyed a longer weekend which was great to have that freedom. I highly recommend becoming a traffic controller in Sydney!
